A copy of the poem has been put up at the site of the former Mother & Baby Home in Tuam by the lovely Helen Gillard, who invited the mighty Catherine Corless along to its unveiling. Catherine is my absolute hero. She has worked tirelessly to get to the bottom of this gruesome story. It was 2013 when she first brought it to the attention of the media, church and state wanting nothing to do with it, and STILL the remains of those children are in that septic tank. WHEN are they going to get a respectful burial? Shame on our government.

What a truly wonderful experience it has been. Not least because you feel as if you’ve somehow infiltrated a Harry Potter film or an episode of Endeavour. It is of course because the teaching is marvellously rigorous. But mostly it’s because of the talented classmates you have and the friends for life that you make. I was up and down to Cork like a mad yoke that week trying to keep the full time teaching job going at the same time. The launch of The Well Review had been on on the Tuesday. It was as close to bilocation as I’m likely to get! I was sorry I didn’t get to attend more of the events due to work commitments. Bantry has to be one of the best literary festivals around. They always have an impressive line-up of writers for readings and workshops. And it's so picturesque! I did a poetry workshop with Jo Shapcott and my son, Ethan, did the teenage writing workshop with Dave Lordan. Some of the highlights were getting to hear Sarah Howe read from the amazing Loop of Jade and the grand finale of Nick Laird and Zadie Smith, a rare treat to get to hear them both on the same stage. Looking forward to next year already!

I came third in The Wild Atlantic Words Poetry Competition with the poem Anadromous Vocabulary and it's published in this lovely anthology by the Hungry Hill Writers. It was the perfect excuse for a visit to the beautiful Castletownbere for the prize-giving ceremony with judge Breda Wall Ryan. It's always extra nice to receive an award from a poet whose work you especially admire. I was only sorry I hadn't my copy of "In A Hare's Eye" with me for her to sign. She has a fine publisher there too in Doire Press with John Walsh and Lisa Frank, based in Connemara.

And by the way. It wasn’t that couch’s only day out. I used it for lots of shoots. This was one of my favourites. Aisling & Tomás were great sports for going along with my mad plan for one of their wedding photos. The walkers on the Salthill prom had a good giggle that day.
